Yes, that's the challenge, and I think ESB space is moving in the right direction. I'm hopeful virtualization efforts will be the catalyst that accelerates that move, but still leaving very flexible base products. An Interesting development in the virtualization area is VMWare's acquisition of SpringSource.

Interesting thoughts on the appliance space, Tom. As a fan of XML appliances, I agree completely. Where they excel is when they are targeted at a specific set of capabilities that can be configured, not coded. Personally, I simply wish that there wasn't such a chasm in management interfaces between the appliance space and the ESB space. I'm tired of seeing the complexity associated with the management interface of many tools in the integration space. The interfaces tend to be so developer-centric, focusing on flexibility, that it makes the effort involved for the 80% cases far more involved than it ever should be.

Thanks Michael for your insight along with additional links.

HP is providing significant BSM guidance to the industry, and I found the tooling compelling as well. Not a big surprise about adoption paths, unfortunately they evolve slowly.

Tom

Hi Tom,
In our experience folks who have not done ITSM yet have not even thought about BSM. It seem that organization evolve.
Michael,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes the strategic role and direction does put IT in a new and challenging role. Perhaps we can name the new mode IT 2.0 :o)

I agree generally BUs and IT really do not know how to effectively function in a strategic mode together. I think the answer will only be found as both come to the table and actually start communicating with each other. Listening a little more instead of talking at each other....much easier said of course, and perhaps a little cliche, but required.
