Business Service Management, Beyond the Technology

Business Service Management (BSM) the new buzz word, well I hope its not since it’s an imperative to optimizing business efficiency. I’ve tried to articulate this before when defining Enterprise Architecture consisting of both IT and Business Operations; with BSM I think we can continue to see the trend of blending business and IT. As technology and its utilization moves beyond being a business enabler, to part of the business operations itself, we will continue to see the technology mechanics fading into the background. Thus more of a focus on the business service it provides; the management or increased visibility of the quality of the business service instead of just the individual constitute technical components.

Many organizations are still struggling with the management of technical components; so the good news is a BSM initiative might be a catalyst to get an organization’s technology management house in order. Since a BSM enabler is IT Service Management, perhaps BSM provides a focal point to drive good ITSM adoption.

Some BSM resources I found very informative:

    Hi Tom,
In our experience folks who have not done ITSM yet have not even thought about BSM. It seem that organization evolve. My colleague Bryan Dean wrote some posts on this you might find interesting. This is the last one which has links to others http://bit.ly/2zUbr

Thanks Michael for your insight along with additional links.

HP is providing significant BSM guidance to the industry, and I found the tooling compelling as well. Not a big surprise about adoption paths, unfortunately they evolve slowly.

On a related topic, I just read Todd Biske’s blog about The Role of the Service Manager, and as usual always full of great insight.
